Course Details
The Standard is applied practically in the Offshore Cruising Standard. You will learn the theory of celestial navigation required to safely navigate a vessel offshore. Topics include: use of a sextant, principles of celestial navigation, and the methods used to determine your position utilizing celestial sightings.

Prerequisites: Coastal Navigation Basic & Intermediate
Program format:
12 hours training with written exam
You will learn the theory of celestial navigation required to safely navigate a vessel offshore. Topics include: use of a sextant, principles of celestial navigation, and the methods used to determine your position utilizing celestial sightings. Find your position anywhere on the planet using the sun and stars. From basic concepts to Sun-Run-Sun and more; additionally, learn to use a sextant and the Sight Reduction Tables.
You will learn in class how to:
- Use a sextant
- Taking a shot
- Reducing a sight
- Determining your position
You will also need:
- Paper and pen for note taking
- Pencil, white eraser, parallel ruler or plotting protractor
- Calculator
